Federal Student Aid and FAFSA
Federal Student Aid is one of the largest providers of financial aid for prospective and current students in the US. There are billions of dollars given to millions of students through federal grants, loans, and work-study programs. In order to be eligible for federal aid, an account needs to be created by going to http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/. You will then be able to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This requires various personal and financial information about the prospective (or current) student and his/her legal guardians (depending on the student's age).
There is a significant difference to each type of Federal Aid:
Fastweb
Fastweb is the premier online resource when it comes to paying for and preparing for school. There are scholarships for every type of student from the high school freshmen to the returning adult. In order to receive information regarding the scholarships, you must create an account with the website. Once you have created an account, you will be prompted to complete a profile asking various questions about yourself. This is what fastweb will use to locate scholarships that you will be eligible to apply for. At this point you are free to search through the scholarships that are offered in addition to having new scholarships e-mailed to you when they become available.

There is a significant difference to each type of Federal Aid:
- Federal Grants are given directly to students and, unlike loans, do not have to be repaid.
- Student Loans can be taken out through various lending companies as well as through Federal Student Aid services. Please be sure you take the time to read all information concerning a loan you might take out (this includes your interest rates as well as timeframe you have to start paying back the loan).
- Work-Study is a program where you are given a part-time job at your university and you are able to use the money made from that job to pay for school expenses.
